Better Business Bureau is warning senior citizens to be aware of an emerging telephone scam that is preying on grandparents nationwide. BBB has recently received reports about grandparents from California to New Hampshire who thought they were aiding their grandchildren by providing money for an emergency situation but were in fact giving thousands of dollars to Canadian con artists.

In light of the current downward trend of the U.S. economy, the National Retail Federation estimates that holiday retail spending will increase by a paltry 2.2 percent, the slowest rate of growth in the last six years. As a result, companies are expected to hire fewer seasonal employees and, unfortunately, this means fewer jobs for cash-strapped consumers looking to supplement their holiday spending money. Better Business Bureau recommends that job hunters looking for seasonal employment start their search now, and is offering advice for landing a job for the holidays.

Discount medical cards may seem like an attractive option for saving money, but Better Business Bureau is advising consumers to do their research and ask the right questions before signing up or they could get ripped off at a time when they can least afford it.

In the last several weeks, Better Business Bureau serving Dallas and Northeast Texas has received hundreds of inquiries on fake check schemes using phony business names and addresses in the Dallas area. BBB warns consumers that the offers are nothing more than schemes to convince victims to deposit a counterfeit check and then send money by wire. Victims end up losing their own money.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus today announced that The Dannon Company has become the 15th company to join the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative. BBB also announced approval of The Dannon Company’s pledge. This pledge includes the commitment that 100 percent of advertising directed primarily to children under 12 in television, radio, print and Internet venues will be for products that meet nutritional guidelines that BBB has reviewed and approved.

Insured drivers whose cars are damaged in auto-deer collisions may be covered for more than they think. With deer migrating and mating season occurring between October and December, Better Business Bureau and Insurance Information Institute recommend that drivers read their auto insurance policy closely or they could miss out on reimbursements or other benefits they are entitled to receive.
