“We’re proud to have our Advertising Review and Marketing and Branding efforts recognized as effective in reaching out to consumers and businesses,” said Jay Newman, President and CEO of BBB serving Dallas and Northeast Texas. “Our Advertising Review program helps businesses advertise in a trustworthy manner, and our marketing shows how BBB helps consumers find businesses to trust.”
BBB Dallas was recognized with these awards:
Advertising Review – BBB conducts a local Advertising Review program to promote truth in advertising through voluntary business self-regulation. Advertising that may be confusing, deceptive, misleading or fraudulent is identified through pro-active review by BBB as well as through customer and competitor complaints. BBB contacts advertisers seeking substantiation where appropriate and adherence to the BBB Code of Advertising. The standards lay out guidelines on issues such as offering “free” items and “meet or beat” underselling claims. In 2013, BBB Dallas challenged 302 advertisements. In the vast majority of cases, businesses cooperated and either provided substantiation, modified the claims, or stopped making the claims in question. Overall, BBB achieved desired results in 90% of cases. Submitted by Phylissia Landix, Director of Advertising Review, with Melanie Alakkam, Business Standards Analyst, and Jimmy Asa, Business Standards Specialist.
Marketing and Branding – To educate consumers and businesses about BBB and the high standards which BBB Accredited Businesses must meet and adhere to, BBB conducted a coordinated multi-media campaign including outdoor advertising on buses and billboards; magazine advertising in Dallas Advocate, D Magazine, D Weddings Magazine, and DCEO Magazine; newspaper advertising in Dallas Business Journal and Sherman Democrat; broadcast advertising on KXAS-TV (NBC5); spots on WFAA-TV’s Good Morning Texas and KXAS-TV’s Talk Street; digital advertising on NBCDFW.com, NBCDFW APP, and social media; and movie advertising at Cinemark Theaters, AMC Theaters, and Regal Theaters. The outdoor campaign and print ads featured the BBB Accredited Business Seal as "The Sign of Good Business" showing that an Accredited Business is screened, approved and monitored. Broadcast and movie ads spots showed how BBB helps consumers check out businesses to avoid unsatisfactory experiences. Submitted by Daison Lyken, Marketing Coordinator.
