The Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Dallas has been serving consumers and businesses in the Northeast Texas area for 88 years. Located in downtown Dallas, the BBB serves 13 counties in Northeast Texas: Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, and Rockwall.
Founded by the Dallas Advertising League in 1920, the BBB’s original mission was to promote truth in advertising. That mission is still important today, and, over the years, the Bureau has expanded its scope to include dispute resolution services, reports on companies’ customer experience records, and consumer education.
Today the BBB in Dallas performs over 3.4 million instances of service each year, issuing 1.3 million reliability reports, processing 35,000 complaints and reviewing dozens of ads for compliance with the BBB Code of Advertising, among many other services. These services are underwritten by almost 7,000 businesses and professional firms that qualify for BBB accreditation by meeting the BBB Code of Business Practices, founded on the BBB Standards for Trust.
The BBB in Dallas is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors of business leaders elected by and from the membership. Day-to-day operations are carried out by a staff of over 40 BBB professionals. The BBB is an independent, non-profit organization determined by the IRS to be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code.
BBB services include the following:
BBB Reliability Reports™
Reports on over 80,000 local companies are in our system and available without charge to the public. BBB Reliability Reports tell you how long the company has been in business, whether they have been the subject of customer complaints, whether they’ve resolved them, and if they have been the subject of government actions for deceptive practices. You can start at www.dallas.bbb.org, or call the 24-hour automated information line at 214-220-2000 or 800-705-3994 from surrounding areas. Click here to check out a business.
Dispute Resolution
If you have a complaint with a company located in Dallas or Northeast Texas and you have been unable to resolve it with the company, the BBB will try to assist you. You may file a complaint online at: www.dallas.bbb.org, or you may write a letter of complaint and send it to the BBB at 1601 Elm Street, Suite 3838, Dallas, TX 75201, or fax it to 214-740-0326. The BBB will contact the company to seek its cooperation in resolving your complaint. Please note that we cannot force the company to do so since the BBB is not a law enforcement agency. Nevertheless, the BBB resolves approximately 70% of the complaints it receives.
There are some complaints that we don’t handle. These include employee-employer issues, a complaint that is or has been filed in the court system, and those that request that the BBB act as a collection agency or give legal advice. If we are unable to assist you in processing your complaint, we will try to provide you with the name of the appropriate agency which may be able to assist you.
Lists of BBB Accredited Businesses by Type of Business
We can help you locate a company to do business with by providing you with a list of BBB accredited businesses that provide the products or services you are looking for. These companies have agreed to respond and resolve all customer complaints so you can have an additional measure of confidence when dealing with them. The lists are available free through our Web site.
BBB Tips and General Advice
The BBB develops information on subjects of interest to consumers and in areas in which we see local trends. We offer this advice to businesses, consumers and the media free of charge in the form of press releases and industry tips. Staff members are featured speakers at business and community meetings and are frequently called on by government agencies and the media for comments on scams and for BBB Reliability Reports on companies.
Advertising Review
The BBB monitors local print, broadcast and Web-based advertising on a daily basis and any questionable advertisers are asked to substantiate their claims or modify their ads to conform to both the law and ethical business practices. If our efforts are unsuccessful, the records are turned over to the appropriate law enforcement agency to pursue, and our review findings are posted in the BBB Reliability Report on the company.
